‘The In Crowd’ – Garry Bowler’s Timely Ode to Lemmy, Wayne Kramer, and Original Music
With the release of ‘The In Crowd’, renowned drummer Garry ‘Magpie’ Bowler offers more than just a new single—he delivers a message about the continued importance of original music and the giants who have championed it. As we near the tenth anniversary of Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister’s passing, Bowler’s project arrives as a tribute but also a call to arms for artists everywhere.
The roots of Bowler’s project run deep. Having worked with Motörhead during formative sessions in the 1990s, he brings a direct lineage to the table. For ‘The In Crowd’, he was joined by Alan Davey of Hawkwind on bass, Wayne Kramer of MC5 on guitar, and Enid Williams from Girlschool on vocals—each with firsthand experience at the crossroads of innovation and tradition.
The creative process was an exercise in trust and synergy, with Bowler providing the foundational drum track. The legends who followed added their parts with complete artistic license—an approach that resulted in a vibrant collaboration where each performer’s spirit shines through. Wayne Kramer’s contribution, completed not long before his passing, is particularly poignant, marking one of his last moments in the studio.
Bowler’s adaptation of the song’s lyrics serves as a statement of gratitude to all who create and support original music. ‘The In Crowd’ is both a commemoration of legendary artists and a clear message: honor the past, but always keep creating.
