From Holding an Opinion to Embodying a Principle
“Taking a position” and “taking a stand” are not interchangeable in Serge Beddington-Behrens’s forthcoming book. He describes the second as a deeper commitment to embodying the principles a person supports, rather than simply expressing an opinion about them.
This distinction appears within Regenerating an Unravelling World: The Sacred Challenges of the Warrior Activist, scheduled for publication by Umbria Press in 2026. The book brings personal development and public action together, arguing that greater self-understanding can strengthen efforts to improve society.
Beddington-Behrens links this commitment to qualities including courage, compassion and self-discipline. He also encourages readers to examine their motivations and consider appropriate responses to difficult situations. Within his framework, a firm commitment does not require an impulsive or hostile reaction.
The distinction directs attention towards consistency between values and behaviour. It asks readers to consider not only what they support, but how that support appears in their relationships, decisions and actions. The emphasis is on principles as something to practise, not merely declare.
