Abbey Road Studios – A trip to memory lane: 2 legendary albums one studio
When it comes to Abbey Road Studios, music legends (spoiler alert – The Beatles -), amazing recording facilities, live recordings of our favorite musicians, great albums, and many many more come to mind.
But let’s take a trip down memory lane and remind ourselves of 2 of the most celebrated albums that came out of this legendary building:
- The Beatles – “Please Please Me”
- Year: 1963
- Recorded when Abbey Road Studios were known as EMI Recording Studios (referring to EMI records – Universal Music Group)
- insights: (Source)
“The Beatles’ Please Please Me album was rush-released by Parlophone on 22nd March, 1963 to capitalise on the enormous success of the title track which had been the group’s second single and their first no. 1 in the majority of UK charts.”
- Pink Floyd – “The Piper At The Gates of Dawn”
- Year: 1967
- Insights:
Coincidentally enough, (not really) Pink Floyd’s debut album was produced by the Beatles’ producer Norman Smith and “was recorded at the same time, in the next studio, that the Beatles were recording Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” (Source). Specifically, the producer recalls: “The control room door opens and in walks Paul McCartney. He wanted to meet the boys. He’d heard of them. And after a little chat with them, he comes across to me, puts his hand on my shoulder and he says to the Pink Floyd boys, ‘You won’t go wrong with this bloke as your producer.’” (Source)
Certainly for both, the producer had a great impact but it was more of a combination of things that led to this huge global success: one-of-a-kind studios, greatly talented musicians, gifted producer, and passion for music and creation.
