Album Review: Mark Springer & Neil Tennant – Sleep of Reason
It’s not every day you find avant-garde pianist Mark Springer and Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant sharing marquee space, but Sleep of Reason is exactly the kind of unexpected collision that keeps adventurous music fans coming back for more. Released by Sub Rosa and The Exit Label on April 25, this double album isn’t just a meeting of minds—it’s a full-on creative summit, with the Sacconi String Quartet supplying classical muscle.
Inspired by Francisco Goya’s infamous etchings, the album moves through three major forms: a searching piano suite, a restless string quartet, and, at its atmospheric centre, a string quintet that frames Tennant’s unmistakable voice and razor-sharp lyricism. The result is equal parts symphonic drama and contemporary commentary. Springer’s piano churns with urgency one moment, then lilts with lyricism the next, while the Sacconi Quartet alternates between tension and tenderness.
It’s in the vocal quintet where Tennant’s contributions shine. His dry yet emotive delivery draws uncanny parallels between Goya’s visions of 18th-century dread and the digital monsters—egos, divisions, and devils—of today. These themes come together beautifully in the lead single, “Phantoms and Monsters,” which sets the album’s tone: dark, daring, and unafraid of the strange.
Despite the heavy inspiration and cross-genre ambition, Sleep of Reason is never overwrought or ponderous. Instead, it’s intelligent, absorbing, and strangely beautiful—a seamless meeting of pop intellect and experimental risk-taking. Springer and Tennant are equals here, each stretching comfortably beyond their comfort zones.
With its sprawling ambition, Sleep of Reason invites listeners to wander Goya’s haunted landscape and reckon with the present. The result is one of the most surprising and satisfying album collaborations of the year.
