“LAW OF AVERAGES” by Vince Staples Out Now

Since his debut in the early 2010s, Vince Staples has since been a pivotal figure in the hip hop and rap genres and continues to be one with his latest single “LAW OF AVERAGES.” Hailing from California, Vince Staples has stayed true to his roots in both west coast rap and west coast culture.

In Vince Staples’ newest track, which was released on the 18th of June, he raps about not being disrespected or mistreated by his peers and the people he meets and has known. Throughout the song, he asserts his dominance by comparing himself to and referencing several famous fighters and weapons that he can use to kill anyone that crosses him. With the lyrics being the main driving point of the song, the backing track stylistically stays out of the lyrics’ way while offering interesting countermelodies to really highlight the chorus of the song.

“LAW OF AVERAGES” was also released with a music video that really highlights the message of the song. With Vince Staples’ growing fame, more and more people ask him for money and seemingly pretend to be good friends with the rapper, as evidenced by the comically large smiles in the music video (at least that was my interpretation of it). In both the song and the music video, Vince Staples calls out people for being fake when someone comes across a lot of money or fame, hence why the lyrics emphasize Vince Staples asserting his dominance and independence.
