Single From St. Vincent, “Sad But True,” For Metallica Tribute Album Dropped Today

Since the 2007 debut of St. Vincent, this influential and ever-changing artists has only continued to break boundaries musically and in terms of her image. St. Vincent’s latest single, “Sad But True,” which was released today (the 29th of June), continues this artist’s trend of pushing her own boundaries, both musically and lyrically, to create a unique sound very similar to that of 90s grunge acts, specifically Hole. Choosing to cover this classic by Metallica really shows off St. Vincent’s artistic diversity and capabilities. This cover of “Sad But True” is for the upcoming Metallica tribute album, set to be released in the near future.

This release comes only about a month after St. Vincent’s sixth album release of Daddy’s Home, named after the release of her own father from prison, and containing hit songs “Pay Your Way In Pain” and “The Melting Of The Sun.” The songs on this album are very distantly related in terms of genre to the most recent single by St. Vincent.

As I mentioned earlier, St. Vincent’s “Sad But True” shares many qualities to the grunge genre but the pivotal artist puts her own modern twist on it that really revitalizes the genre. This heavier and angrier tone to the song is center stage with the distorted and electronic-sounding guitar and bass playing over a heavy-hitting drum beat. The instrumentation presented throughout this song creates the sense that there is something right around the corner waiting to get you, much like the original does but St. Vincent’s does it very differently.

Although St. Vincent’s version of this song does not contain the shredding solos of the original, the artists does present her own guitar virtuosity on her cover of the song. There are definitely elements of the original song presented in the cover version by St. Vincent, but the grunge influences on the artist and the modern production means of creating and altering sounds recreates this classic that may be more appealing to younger audiences.

Since St. Vincent is constantly creating and writing new music, it is important to stay up to date and follow her on social media, which is linked below.
