Laura Mazon Franqui Connects Classical Guitar Tradition and Contemporary Voices on Rojo
Laura Mazon Franqui’s upcoming album Rojo bridges classical guitar tradition with contemporary Latin American voices. Scheduled for release by Prima Classic on May 29, 2026, the album includes works by historic figures such as Francisco Tárrega, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Joaquín Turina, and Leo Brouwer, alongside music by living composers including Carlos Rafael Rivera and Claudia Montero.
Franqui has long shown a commitment to Cuban and Latin American repertoire, contemporary music, women composers, and underrepresented voices. Her collaborations have included Grammy-winning composers Claudia Montero, Carlos Rafael Rivera, and Yalil Guerra, reflecting her interest in projects that combine artistic excellence with storytelling and cultural connection.
On Rojo, that commitment becomes personal. The album is shaped by Franqui’s experiences of grief, resilience, memory, and transformation, as well as by her identity as a Cuban artist. It was created as a tribute to family and mentors, while also reflecting her belief in music’s ability to preserve meaning across time.
Franqui’s advocacy extends beyond performance. She has been involved with the World Woman Foundation and Diane von Furstenberg’s InCharge initiative, supporting greater visibility and opportunity for women musicians and especially women guitarists. Rojo continues that larger mission by presenting classical guitar as a space for history, homage, and human connection.
