The Dreamlike Worlds of Nick Williams

Nick Williams’ paintings are instantly recognisable for their intense colour, richly worked surfaces and imaginative sense of place. As a Cornish artist, he creates oil paintings that invite viewers to enjoy their visual beauty while also considering the stories suggested within them.

His work often explores atmosphere, memory and narrative. Williams has said, “I’m mainly trying to create a feeling of place and atmosphere,” and this aim is central to his paintings. Many of his scenes appear warm, sun-drenched and distant, giving the impression of places remembered from journeys or imagined through storytelling.

A key feature of Williams’ practice is his use of heavily textured paint. He builds layers, sands them back and reworks them over long periods of time. Some paintings are developed over months or even years, allowing the surface to become layered both physically and visually.

Williams has followed an independent route, choosing not to attend art school and instead developing his own language as a self-taught artist. His career has included important milestones such as a solo exhibition at 54 The Gallery in Shepherd Market, Mayfair, in 2023.
